The Blessing of the Fleet or “Boat Blessing” is an annual event that is held in many fishing communities around the world. These are religious events generally celebrating the commencement of upcoming fishing seasons and are a vehicle for asking God for a safe and plentiful season.
In Louisiana, boat blessings have traditionally been held in Chauvin, Dulac, Pointe-aux-Chenes, Dularge, Golden Meadow, St. Bernard, Delcambre, and other areas along the coast.
Dates for this year’s Dulac and Chauvin boat blessing celebrations have been set as follows.
Dulac/Grand Caillou – Sunday, April 3: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (blessing starts at 2 p.m.), Holy Family Catholic Church, 6641 Grand Caillou Road, Dulac; the boat parade will travel up and down Bayou Grand Caillou (contact the rectory at 985-563-2325)
Chauvin – Sunday, April 10: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., The celebration is held at the Chauvin Sculpture Gardens, 5337 Bayouside Drive (contact Michael Williams at 985-493-2500); the boat parade starts in front of the St. Joseph Cataholic Church, 5232 La. 56, Chauvin and travels down Bayou Terrebonne to Boudreaux Canal (contact Msgr.
